What playground cleaning actually involves

Playground cleaning is the removal of algae, moss and biological growth from safety surfacing and play equipment using low pressure methods that leave the surface itself intact. The point of it is slip resistance. Wet pour, artificial grass, timber and painted metal all become slippery once a film of algae builds up in the texture, and that film needs killing at the root rather than simply blasting off the top.

Playground cleaning is a safety job that happens to look like a cleaning job. Wet pour rubber, artificial grass and painted steelwork all develop a thin biological film in a wet climate, and that film is what makes a surface slippery underfoot. It is rarely obvious as dirt. A wet pour surface can look perfectly acceptable from the staff room window and still be slick, because the algae is sitting down in the texture where nobody is looking.

Wet pour is rubber crumb bound with polyurethane and laid to a depth set by the fall height of the equipment above it. It is porous by design, so water passes through and drains away. Once moss and algae close those pores, water sits on top instead, the surface stays wet for days after rain and the drainage the designer relied on stops doing its job. High pressure clears the growth and tears the binder at the same time, so we do not use it.

We work around the site rather than expecting the site to work around us. Most school and nursery work is booked into half terms, holidays or before the gates open, and parish council play areas are usually done early so the space is back in use by mid morning.
